My first reaction is to say that it’s been a rough week, but if we’re being real here…it’s been a rough much longer than that. The weight that we’re carrying today isn’t just the weight of two innocent Black men last week.
I remember standing at the juice stand at R/GA when the decision for Trayvon Martin came through. I was livid. I remember marching the streets with Avantika and Mye when the decision for Eric Garner came through. I was on the verge of tears nearly every night for a week. Sandra Bland. Her videos. Her story. Heartbreak. Last week two men were killed. And people actually stood up to defend it. Earlier today I learned that the cop who beat the Indian Grandpa to near death is off scot free.
Quis custodiet ipsos custodes is a Latin phrase used in Roman text. It translates to Who will guard the guards themselves? If there are people given the power to watch over us and keep us in order–who ensures that they remain orderly? If they have the highest power they should watch over themselves.
They’re doing a shit job of that. Not all of them, but enough of our boys & girls in blue are not speaking out against the wrong doing of others. They’re not checking themselves. Our politicians aren’t speaking out on them. Our governments sit idly and over police POC communities. Our corporations pay no attention.
wtf, america. It’s time we answered the question. Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?
