Working with the World does not take away sovereignty

The U.N. Convention on the Rights of Persons With Disabilities is a human rights treaty negotiated by the George H.W. Bush administration. When the Senate Foreign Relations Committee approved the treaty with bipartisan support in July, Chairman John Kerry (D-Mass.) explained the proposal simply “raises the [international] standard to our level without requiring us to go further.” (Maddow)

This week it was voted down 61-38 with all 38 Senators voting against-all Republicans. Alongside China, Russia, Iran, Cuba, Syria, and Saudi Arabia it has been ratified by 126 countries.

Aligning to international standards that increase the value of life shouldn’t be a question. The argument that it offends sovereignty is a weak and fearful one. If this isn’t a call for change, I don’t know what is.
